Hi All,

We will be driving down from Naples airport in 12 days or so and I was wondering is there anything we should be seeing on the way? We are only in Pizzo for 4 days so wouldn't want to delay too long. Is it A3 all the way basically?

Barney

Pompei and Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast as a starter in the first few kilometres.

herculaneum is the better, fewer people, better preservation and doable rather than a hike around a town. be careful to hide belongings in car whereever you stop.

I concur with the suggestions, other than that, yes, A3 all the way from Salerno, aka Autostrada del Sole. Much improved by the way.

hi Barney,
It is basically the A3 all the way down.
Places to visit if you are interested in archaelogy are Pompeii, Herculaneum (which I liked very much). Both these sites need a day to explore.
On your way down after Salerno is Paestum which has three 5th Century BC Temples. It may only take half a day to visit. I haven't been there yet but I am visiting Paestum and staying overnight on the 25th May and looking forward to seeing these Magna Graecia Temples.

Thanks David. That's our problem we are only in Calabria 4 days and want to chill. May have to leave the site seeing for again.

You can turn off the A3 after Salerno and stop off in Maratea which is a pretty town and then follow the SS18 all the way down to Pizzo with the sea on your right - a bit slower but lots of chances for coffee breaks and spectacular scenery!!

How are the roadworks on the A3 from Salerno, is it best to take the ss18 down to Pizzo?

I haven't done this road since last May But I think the A3 is still the quickest way down south despite the roadworks that were not so many last year.
If time is no problem the coast road would be the most scenic I would think.
