One of the companies linked to the most notorious man in the overseas property industry has closed down, according to a report in the Spanish press.

Darragh MacAnthony’s MRI Property International, based in Florida, has closed its doors and is currently under investigation by the state attorney.

The company is alleged to have been offering an off-plan development, Los Jardines Del Sol, to overseas buyers without proper planning permission.

Prosecutor Stephen Menge told the Olive Press: “We have had a lot of complaints about Los Jardines Del Sol and our investigation is continuing.”

Mr MacAnthony’s former business MacAnthony Realty International (MRI) was the most financially successfully overseas property company in the industry, selling thousands of off-plan properties in Spain and Bulgaria during the late nineties and early noughties.

Soon after the market collapsed, MRI went into administration owing considerable sums of money to off-plan property buyers. Mr MacAnthony’s current business interests include MRI Overseas Property, which sells furniture packs and property developer MRI Construction. He is also chairman of Peterborough United Football Club, which play in the English championship.
