Just a question regarding the suitability of an electric hob, a basic one, our apartments supply of electricity has been upgraded to 4.5kw so thought it should be ok, am being told only an expensive induction type hob would work, not sure if this is correct or not....help

thecobbler,

Electric hobs are and will be expensive to run, however, is there no way that you can change to a gas hob? i ask, as they are much, much cheaper to buy and run, you can have them run on either mains gas (if you have it) or bottle gas, the latter can be put under the worktop, (mines underneath, next to the sink drainer) they will also will last, at everyday use, approx 1 bottle every 3months and seems they are only 16 Euro a pop for a 18kg bottle then it will invariably cost much less than a electric hob to run over a comparable period.
If it has to be electric then i see no reason why you should have to use an induction type, 4.5 should be more than enough to run the hob and lights, etc, however if your also running, Air-con and a large-ish water heater as well then you may well have "Trip" issues, in that case you may need to up the supply wich would only lead to even more expense and also sway the argument in favour of a gas hob, you can also specify a gas oven too, don’t just settle for a “electric” one, yes they cost more initially but work out cheaper in the long run......

Hope thats of some use.

Mark

I had an ordinary electric hob installed when the Kitchen was fitted, it worked fine, however it is now religated to the basement and has been replaced with gas bottle gas hob, the reason is that even with 4.5 watts (?) of electricity it was still tripping which was extreemly frustrating.Like Mark says my gas bottle fits under the sink and i have got used to it.
Good luck with whatever you chose.

I keep hearing that electric hobs are expensive but whats expensive as its all relative to what you are prepared to pay. My friend lives locally and pays around Euro 18 per month for electricity. I know locals pay less for electricity than non residents but how much more - does anyone know? What it is? double, treble???? compared to what we pay in the UK is it really expensive and compared to how often it is used as a lot of people will not be there all the time.
