Can anyone recommend a car hire company from Naples airport? We are flying in to Naples mid May and driving down to Sabbi de Marinella near la metzia. Also, if anyone has done it, how long? and how was the journey?

Just a warning. I hired from Sicily by Car in November for a week. Drove to Amantea, had a totally uneventful week. Arrived back at the airport where their agent inspected the car. On the nearside handle and door over rider were some minor scuff marks on the plastic. A quick wipe with Back to Black would have cured it. I had no knowledge of how they got there and they may well have been there before I picked the car up. Anyway it cost me 350 Euro. So advice. Either take out the top insurance cover or inspect your car very carefully and make sure you photograph it and make sure you let the agent see you do it.
Regards Alistair

Hi
We use Targarent from Naples when we fly. We always take the agent all round the car and photograph any damage no matter how small and get them to log it on the paper work of which we get a copy. This ensures no nasty shocks later. Hope you find this useful.
Regards
Heather

I can only agree that it is so important to check the car out before leaving, however a useful tip is to take out an annual damage waiver insurance through companies such as Insurance4carhire who will charge £49 per annum to cover against such eventualities.

Agree with other comments about checking/photographing bodywork and getting it logged on paperwork before you drive away (ensure you keep a copy). Also most hire companies seem to operate on the basis of starting with a full tank of fuel and returning the vehicle with a full tank of fuel. Leave yourselves enough time to fill up when returning......we didn't and after we returned our credit card was charged about €120 euros to top up the tank of a Fiat Panda! Also Rental Return area can be a bit tricky to find your way back to.........especially if you're late and in a hurry! If you're taking SatNav enter the location when you collect your car. Driving down to Calabria (and around Calabria) from the airport is straightforward enough although when we were last there in October there were a lot of road works. Service stations/rest areas are fairly plentiful and our journey, with stops, took about 6 hours. If you've not driven in Italy before most Italians seem to drive at about 150% of the legal speed limit......be prepared for a lot of tailgating! Also, unless you are a real masochist, avoid driving in central Naples....especially the old city areas. Other than that, no problem.....have fun! Glider.

We flew into Naples in December and also used Targarent for car hire. Unfortunately our experience with them was not positive. We were given a car that had definately seen better days complete with a list of damage and a tank that was about three-quarters full. We returned the car at the end of our holiday and it was checked by the company's representative at the drop off point. A few days after we had returned home I checked our credit card bill on-line and discovered that they had taken 600Euros from us without explanation. We reported them to American Express and immediately challenged them to give us a full description of any damage we had caused with evidence and fortunately they backed down and refunded the money. The moral of the story is, as others have said, check thouroughly and keep all documentation.

Its more expensive to hire a car at Naples airport than Lamezia with Autoeurope, even after you've added the train fare.
Its a long drive and feels longer on the return journey when you've got a flight to catch!
However, a trip to IKEA in Napoli for home owners is always an option.........
